What’s the Best Age for Newborn Photography?
One of the first questions new parents ask is “when should we book our newborn photos?” It is a good one because those early days move by so quickly, and every stage brings its own beauty.
Around the Two Week Mark
For most of my clients, I recommend booking your newborn session around the two week mark. This gives you a little space to rest and recover, while still capturing your baby when they are so fresh and tiny. Those early days pass quickly, and this timing tends to strike a nice balance.
My Approach to Newborn Sessions
My style is natural and relaxed. I do not use elaborate props or complex posing. Instead, I gently guide babies into comfortable positions that feel authentic and show their little details just as they are. Sessions are calm and baby led, with plenty of room for cuddles, feeding breaks, and family connection.
What About Two Weeks vs Four Weeks?
In reality, a session at two weeks looks quite similar to a session at four weeks. The main difference is that babies tend to be a little more alert as the weeks go on and may need a touch more settling. Whether your baby is 14 days old or a month old, we can still capture a beautiful mix of sleepy moments and natural family connection.
After Six Weeks
I also regularly photograph babies around six weeks or even a little older. At this stage, babies are often much more awake and expressive. They may not curl up quite the same way, but you will often see gorgeous eye contact, stretches, and personality shining through. Sessions usually take on a more relaxed lifestyle feel, but you can still expect a combination of awake and sleepy photos.
The Takeaway
There is no single right age for newborn photos. For many families, two weeks feels like the ideal window, but four weeks or even beyond can be just as special. What matters most is capturing your baby in this fleeting season. Whether they are tiny and curled up or starting to smile with bright eyes, these moments are worth remembering.
The best age is the one that works for your family. Every stage offers something beautiful, and your photos will always hold the memory of this time in your story.
