Studio vs In-Home Newborn Photography: Which Is Right for Your Family?
When you begin looking for a newborn photographer, one of the first decisions you may come across is whether you would prefer a studio session or an in-home newborn photography session.
There can be an assumption that studio photography is polished and controlled, while in-home photography is always wide, documentary-style and heavily focused on the house itself. In reality, there is much more variation within both approaches.
My own in-home newborn sessions sit in a lovely balance between the two. They are relaxed, baby-led and held in the comfort of your home, but I also bring the equipment and experience needed to create soft, refined and intimate newborn photographs.
Your home can feature as much or as little as you would like.
What is a studio newborn session?
A studio newborn session takes place in a purpose-built photography space. Depending on the photographer’s style, this may include styled sets, decorative props, backdrops, studio lighting or more structured posing.
This can be a great fit for families who love a particular studio aesthetic or want access to elaborate sets and props.
The practical difference is that you will need to leave home with your baby and bring everything you may need for feeding, changing and settling. For some families this is no issue at all, while others love the ease of staying at home during those first few weeks.
In-home doesn’t have to mean showing your entire home
An in-home newborn session does not mean that every room, piece of furniture or unfinished corner of your house needs to appear in your photographs. You may be renting, renovating, short on space or simply not particularly interested in featuring your home. That is completely fine.
When I arrive, one of the first things I do is look at the light and find the best section of your home to work in. It may be a small area near a bedroom or living-room window. We can shift a few things out of the way if needed, and I bring sheer curtains that can be clamped in place to help soften and shape the window light.
I also bring my newborn photography beanbag, along with a collection of blankets, wraps and hand-knitted outfits for your baby. This allows me to create a simple, soft setup that places all the attention on your baby and your family.
Because I shoot quite intimately, with lots of connection, close-ups and small details, the finished photographs may give very little indication of what the rest of the room or home looks like. You could almost be anywhere.
Experience working in hundreds of Sydney homes
Photographing newborns in-home requires a photographer to walk into an unfamiliar space and quickly understand how to make it work. After photographing babies in hundreds of Sydney homes, I have worked with rooms of every size, style and level of natural light. I know how to look for the strongest light, choose flattering angles and decide what will work best for the type of gallery we are creating.
I do not expect clients to identify the perfect location before I arrive. Reading light and working with the space is my job!
Sometimes the best setup is beside a large bedroom window. Other times it is a small patch of light in the living room. It does not need to be an enormous or perfectly styled space. I only need enough room to create a comfortable setup and photograph your family closely.
A polished look without leaving home
For families who want a clean and refined gallery, we can keep the setup simple and minimise how much of the home appears.
The sheer curtains, soft blankets and neutral setup create a beautiful basic backdrop while still allowing the photographs to feel warm and natural. Your baby remains the focus, along with their expressions, movements and the way they fit into your arms. We will capture natural solo portraits of your baby, family cuddles, sibling interactions and close-up details such as their fingers, toes, lashes and lips.
The session itself remains relaxed, with plenty of time for feeding, changing and settling, but the final gallery can still feel considered and polished.
When your home is part of the story
Of course, if you love your home and want it included, we can absolutely lean into that too.
We might photograph your baby in their nursery, capture your family through an archway or doorway, use reflections through a window, or include wider photographs that show more of the space around you.
We can even step outside for a “welcome to my crib” style photograph in front of the house, which can be especially meaningful if it is a home you love or somewhere important to your family.
Some galleries clearly show the family’s home, while others are photographed so intimately that the surroundings almost disappear. Most sessions include a mixture, and we can decide together how much of your home you would like to feature.
What about siblings and pets?
Being at home is particularly helpful when toddlers, older children or pets are involved.
Children can take breaks, find a familiar toy or have a snack without being in a completely new environment. I follow their lead and gently guide them into moments with the baby without expecting them to sit still or perform.
Pets can also be included naturally and safely without needing to transport them somewhere unfamiliar.
Which option is right for your family?
A studio session may suit you if you love a particular photographer’s studio aesthetic, want elaborate sets or prefer to have your session in a space designed exclusively for photography.
An in-home newborn session may suit you if you want:
- The ease of staying home with your newborn
- A relaxed and baby-led experience
- Soft, polished photographs without needing a perfect home
- The choice to show as much or as little of your surroundings as you like
- Natural family, sibling and pet photographs
- A combination of gently guided portraits and unscripted connection
- Plenty of intimate close-ups and newborn details
- Flexibility for feeding, changing and settling
You do not necessarily need to choose between comfort and a polished gallery. My approach brings the setup, guidance and experience to you, creating beautiful newborn photographs while allowing your family to remain in the place where you already feel most at ease.
