Why Overcast Weather Is Actually Amazing For Your Photos
When you picture your session, you might imagine golden light and a perfect sunset. But some of my favourite galleries have been taken on fully overcast days. Cloud cover can create the most flattering, consistent light, and it often makes families feel more relaxed.
Here is why an overcast day is not something to worry about at all.
Softer Light Means Softer Skin Tones
Clouds act like a giant soft box. They spread the light evenly, which means no harsh shadows, no squinting, and no bright patches on skin. Your photos come out balanced and clean.
Kids Can Look Anywhere
Bright sun makes kids squint and look away. Overcast days take that pressure off. Everyone can look in any direction without worrying about the sun hitting their eyes.
You Get More Freedom With Locations
On a sunny day, we have to chase shade or position everyone carefully. On an overcast day, we can shoot anywhere. Beaches, open fields, clifftops, parks. Everything works.
More Time To Shoot
Without direct sun moving quickly, the light stays even for longer. That gives us the freedom to take our time, move around, and create more variety in your gallery.
The Best Sunsets Happen With Clouds
Those really colourful sunsets that go pink, orange, and purple almost always need some cloud cover - If we have any chance of a spectacular sunset, first we need clouds. A clear sky gives you a soft fade. Clouds are what catch the light and make everything glow. An overcast afternoon can still surprise you with a sky that looks incredible in the last few minutes - Check out some of the images below.
Your Gallery Will Still Have Depth
Overcast does not mean flat. I shoot in a way that brings depth and connection into the images, regardless of the weather. You will still get warmth, contrast, movement, and all the emotion you booked me for.
It Lets Us Focus On What Matters Most
At the end of the day, the magic of your session comes from connection, not weather. Overcast days remove distractions and let your family settle into each other.
