Why I love winter sessions!

Winter might not be the first season that comes to mind when you’re thinking about family photos, but I’m here to gently convince you otherwise. It’s actually one of my favourite times of year to photograph families, and for good reason. Here’s why winter is a little bit magic, and why it might just be the perfect time for your next family session.

The Light Is Soft, Golden and Dreamy

In winter, the sun sits lower in the sky for longer, which means that golden light photographers love? It sticks around. The result is soft, diffused light that flatters everyone and gives your images that beautiful warm glow, even on a cool day.

And the best part? That golden hour magic happens earlier in the day, which means no pushing into bedtime territory for little ones. Sessions often start around 4pm, and we’re wrapped up before dinner time.

Snuggles Come Naturally

It’s cooler, sure, but that just means more snuggles, cuddles, and close-up moments. I love the natural connection that happens in winter. Families instinctively draw closer together, and the photos are full of intimacy, warmth and love.

There’s something slow and intentional about winter sessions. They feel unhurried. Present. Peaceful.

The Styling is Effortlessly Beautiful

If you’ve ever worried about what to wear for a session, winter takes the pressure off.

Layers, textures and earthy tones shine in this season. Think chunky knits, woolly jumpers, linen overalls, corduroy, boots, beanies and flowy long-sleeve dresses. Cosy, comfortable, and so photogenic.

Neutral palettes with a few warm tones, like rust, oat, cream, soft browns and muted greens, photograph beautifully in winter light and landscape.

Winter Landscapes Are Understated and Stunning

The locations I shoot at in winter have a quiet kind of beauty, long grasses, pale skies, gentle colour tones and soft, open spaces. Without the bright greens of spring or summer, there’s room for emotion and connection to take centre stage.

The backdrop supports the story of you and your family.

There’s Still Time to Book

I only take a limited number of winter sessions to allow for flexibility with weather, and to make sure every family gets my full creative energy. There are just a few dates still available, so if you’ve been thinking about booking, now is the time.

Winter truly is an underrated season for family photos, and it might just be the perfect time to press pause and capture this chapter.
